GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS
THOMAS GEORGE CATOR and SARAH ELIZABETH LUSBY

"Thomas" George Cator was born in April 1836 in District of Columbia, the child of William. He married Sarah Elizabeth Lusby on February 5, 1861, in DC. They had two children in 14 years. He died on February 10, 1912, at the home his son, Charles Conrad Cator Sr, 713 G Street SE in DC, having lived a long life of 75 years.  He was buried in Temple Hills, Maryland.

Sarah gave birth to James "William" Cator in 1861 and his brother, our direct line Charles Conrad Cator, Sr. in 1863.  Also in the home was Mary Ella Cator "Adopted" and Emma Florence Ball, Niece.

1870 From the Spauldings, PGC, MD Census taken on July 10, 1870; This is George Thomas and Sarah Elizabeth Lusby Cator and their children, James William Cator, Charles Conrad Cator, and Mary Ella Cator. The 1880 Census is similar.

1880  We know from the 1880 Census that when son James William was 18 years of age, he still resided in Prince George’s County, MD, at the home of his parents, Thomas and Sarah.  Also residing in this home at that time were Ella, age 14, an adopted daughter of Thomas and Sarah, and Florence, who is age 6, a niece of this family. John Thomas Ridgeway, age 32, was also listed in the Census as a resident of this Cator household.   It is possible that Sarah E. is a "Ridgeway" and this is her relative.  William worked as a Superintendent at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, DC.

1890s:  Per Barbara Cater

This is the Cator Farm House in Prince George's County at 4212 Suitland Road, in Suitland, MD.  "Modest farm house built in the 1890s on a tract of land called "Three Brothers and Silver Hills". Thomas Cator's grandfather Thomas Cator gave each of his 5 sons equal shares of the property. He sold the property in 1901 to Charles Jenkins. House no longer there, the property is overgrown and empty as of  May 2015 when I visited it.:

1900 Census has Thomas as a widower living in Spauldings MD with his daughter, Emma and her husband, Oliver Suit.  He is 64.  His granddaughter Elsie Suit lives in the home also.

1910 Census is taken when Thomas is 75.  He is now living with his son, Charles Conrad Cator, Sr. (a furnaceman at the Navy Yard) and his wife Lurania Clifton Cator.  Also living in the home are his grandchildren, Charles Jr. and Mabel Cator.  Thomas has his own income.

Grave of Sarah E. Cator and death of her husband:

Birth:  1843
Death:  Oct. 5, 1891
Prince George's County
Maryland, USA

Age 48 years
It is assumed that he and Sarah were members or visitors to the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Temple Hills, MD as this family was and is largely Episcopalian over the generations and because he and Sarah have their graves located at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.

Sarah E. Cator who was born in 1843 when Thomas was by then about 7 years of age, married Thomas but only lived to be 48 as she died on Monday, October 5 1891 in PGC, MD, 21 years before Thomas would eventually die on Feb. 13, 1912 in DC. Both endured the Civil War years.

From the Washington Post June 9, 1905. To my knowledge the Charity and WIlliam Cator retained custody of their children/stepchildren. It is interesting to note that Ellen Liston Edwards (Mrs. James Edwards) is Mary Margaret Liston Cator's sister.

William Cator, Belle's husband, died February 3, 1938 at Providence Hospital.  Obituary:

TIDBIT:  William lived from 1861 to 1930 - his lifetime spanned many  major events.   When William was born Abraham Lincoln had just been elected President (1860).  South Carolina seceded from the Union  in 1860 and by 1861 the Confederate States of America comprised 11 states.  The Confederate States took Fort Sumter in 1861, beginning the Civil War.  Maxmilian was Emperor(!) of Mexico in 1863. When William died in 1930, the United States was in the Great Depression and technology of the ‘30s had just discovered the Pencillium mold but it would be 1943 before it would treat patients as "Penicillin"!  Imagine -living through the Civil War and the Depression!!
