GENERATION 1:  ZETHAN AND MARTHA FRENCH

Zetham French was born in 1745 in Massachusetts per the AGBI, Volume 58, page 490 indexed in 1914; and per our family bible, he died on April 7, 1830 at the age of 85..

Zetham married "Martha LNU" and had the following children (source below) :

    Daniel French b: 15 Feb 1770
    William French b: 23 Nov 1771
    Mary French b: 23 Jan 1774
    Samuel French b: 13 Jan 1776  d: Sep 4, 1852 at age76 (See Generation 2)
    Jeremiah French b: 2 May 1778 d: 20 Oct 1800
    Martha French b: 2 Jun 1780
    Dorothy French b: 2 Feb 1785 d: 16 Mar 1862
    Joel French b: 20 Jul 1787 d: 1875 (See Generation 2)
                married  Jane Black b: 18 May 1793 d: 1863
    Josiah French b: 10 Jan 1790
    Zetham French II b: 5 Nov 1782 d: 20 Sep 1824 (See Generation 2)
                married Jane H Young b: 1792 d: 29 Aug 1874

Per the 1777 Maine Census, Zetham was then living in Penobscot Maine:

Per the 1790 Census for Frankfort, Hancock County, Maine, Zetham's household included  3 white males 16 or older, 5 white males under 16, and 4 females.

Per the 1800 Census for Prospect, Hancock County, Maine, his household included 5 males, 2 of whom were 10-15 years old; 3 being 16-25 years old, and one being 45 years or older (Zetham) + females were 1 between 10-15, 1 between 16-25 and 1 being 45 years of age or old (wife).

"Martha LNU" French died on 19 Mar 1826

Zetham French died on April 7, 1830 at the age of 85 in Stockton Springs, ME.  Buried in Sandy Point Cemetery in Waldo County, Maine.

GENERATION 2:  SAMUEL AND SARAH BOYD FRENCH
Samuel French
b: 13 Jan 1776  d: Sep 4, 1852 at age76

** SAMUEL FRENCH was born in 1776 in Prospect and lived to his mid 70s when he died in 1852.  Samuel married Sarah Boyd who was 6 years his junior.  She was born in 1782 and died 6 years before Samuel, in 1848.  Their marriage bond was published on the 29th day of  July in 1804.

GENERATION 2:  JOEL AND JANE BLACK FRENCH

JOEL FRENCH (ZETHAM) was born 20 Jul 1787 in Prospect (now Stockton Springs, Maine), and died 1875.  His intention to marry JANE BLACK was filed on 19 Sep 1813 in Prospect;  they were married by Henry Black (close relative?).   She was born 18 May 1793, and died 1863.

Children of JOEL FRENCH and JANE BLACK, all born in Prospect Maine are:

1)  CELLA MARSH  FRENCH, b. 22 Dec 1813

2)  REBECCA JANE FRENCH, b. 18 Jun 1815

3)  ELIZA FRENCH, b. 23 Jun 1817

4)  JAMES RILEY FRENCH, b. 26 Mar 1822

5)  HARRIETT FRENCH, b. 08 Nov 1824

6)  DOLLY ANN FRENCH, b. 13 Feb 1829

7)  SUSAN LOCK FRENCH, b. 10 Mar 1831

8)  FRANCIS LORING FRENCH, b. 12 Jan 1833

GENERATION 2:  ZETHAM II & JANE YOUNG FRENCH

Descendants of Zetham French II

ZETHAM FRENCH II (ZETHAM) was born 5 Nov 1782, and died 20 Sep 1824. He married JANE H YOUNG. She was born 1792, and died 29 Aug 1874.  Grave is of Zetham and Jane Young French at Sandy Point Cemetery, Stockton Springs, Waldo, Maine, USA:

Known Children of ZETHAM FRENCH and JANE YOUNG are:

1) HARTWELL W. FRENCH, b. 15 Aug 1814, Stockton, ME; m. MARTHA ANN BLACK; b. 05 Sep 1820, Prospect. Per the 1860 Census, Hartwell was a Master Mariner who was living in Stockton when on home soil.

2)  ZETHAM FRENCH (III), b. 1820

Per the 1840 Census for Prospect, Waldo County, Maine, Zetham French (JR?) household included 1 male age 10-14; 1 male age 15-19, 2 males age 20-29, 1 male 40-49 and 1 male 50-59.  Women in the household were 1 child under age 5, one girl 5-9, 2 females 19-29 and 1 woman 50-59.

Jumping now to the 1860 Census, we have  Zetham French (II) listed as 78 years of age, or being born about 1782.  This is son of Zetham French who was born in 1745. Note:  Lissie was born after death of Zetham II not his daughter; similar issues with Howard Griffin and Miranda Griffin, who is likely a Miranda French.

Per the war records of 1812, Zetham French II is listed as serving in the Massachusetts Militia as a private.

FOLLOWING ARE NOT YET LINKED TO THE

ABOVE FRENCH FAMILY MEMBERS:

*CAPTAIN BENJAMIN F. FRENCH was born in 1825. Parents are currently not known to me  In the 1850 Census for Prospect, Maine, Benjamin is listed as a 25 year old "sailor."  He married LOIS E. LNU who was born two years later in 1827.  Capt. French died April 29, 1860 but his widow lived another 40 years, passing away at the turn of the century, 1900.  Captain French is buried at the Sandy Point Cemetery in Sandy Point, ME.

According to one source, they had a son, CHARLES N. FRENCH who lived only about one year, crossing over on the 14th of January 1858, approximately 2 years before his dad died in 1860.

The 1860 Census seems to contradict this.  Lois French of Stockton is listed as the head of the household at age 33 (agrees with her being born 1827), has a home worth $1200 and personal property valued at $1,000.  With her are children, Evelyn French, age 7 (born about 1853) and Charles N. French, age 4 (Jan 1857) and Susan French, age 1 (born about 1859.)  There is no date listed on the census form as to when the census-taker recorded the family's information.
1860 Census: Stockton, Waldo County, ME

In the 1850 Census, EVERETT FRENCH, a sailor,  born about 1808 is listed as living in Prospect Maine with his wife, Mary A., age 31, and, I am assuming, children.  The first child is Margaret A. who is 15, meaning that Mary had her when she was abut 16.  Then came Octavia (about 1837) followed by EVERETT FRENCH (Jr.?) born about 1839.  Samuel, George L, Mary A. and Sarah B. are the last children known born to  this couple.

As seen in the 1860 Census shown under Capt. Benjamin French, living next door to Lois and the kids is an EVERETT H. FRENCH and his family. Everett is listed a 52-year old farmer born in approximately 1808 (not the Everett listed in the family bible).  His wife is Mary A, who is 48 years old (born about 1812).  They have a son SAMUEL FRENCH, who is 19-year old Mariner, born about 1841 (does not match any listed in the family bible), George L. French,  who is 16-year old farm laborer (born about 1844), Mary A. French who is 15 (born about 1845) and Sarah B. French who is 12 (born about 1848).

In the 1870 Census for Stockton Maine, Everett is now 61, Mary A. is 58, and their children George (a 26 year old Mariner), Mary (a 24 year old Seamstress), and Sarah
(a 23 year old school teacher) are all still living at home with their parents.
